Pearl

Pearl Wells is the protagonist of Jacqueline Wilson's novel, My Sister Jodie.

Appearance[]

Characteristics[]

Pearl is slight and smaller then average for her age, possibly due to the fact that she was born prematurely. She has fair hair, which she usually wears in two plaits, blue eyes and a pale complexion.

Attire[]

Pearl mainly wears t-shirts with jeans or skirts with tights and flat shoes. She also occasionally wears a velvet Alice band. For school, she wears the Melchester College uniform, which consists of a red sweatshirt, white blouse, striped red and gold tie, grey skirt, knee high socks and conker brown lace up shoes.

Personality[]

Pearl is very shy and timid and is often over-shadowed by Jodie, who Pearl absolutely adores. She is very well-behaved and, as a result, she is favoured over Jodie by their mother. However, due to Pearl's reluctancy to stand up for herself, she was targeted by bullies at her previous school and found herself friendless, until her family moved to Melchester College. Pearl can also be quite anxious and nervous, particularly concerning her sister's explicit activites and unusual choices, such as when Jodie dyed her hair black and it turned purple instead due to originally being dyed orange. Pearl is also very loyal to her friends and family, as is displayed when she stood up for her mother's position as cook at Melchester. She also dotes on her new sister, May, who is born soon after they moved away again.

Pearl is devastated and heartbroken when tragedy strikes and after they move to a flat in London, unable to live at the college where Jodie died, she keeps in touch with Harley and her other friends.

Trivia[]

  • Pearl assures May that she will always be there for her, but she doesn't think she'll ever be as good as Jodie.
  • Pearl’s first word was Jodie.
  • Although Pearl’s exact birthdate is unknown, it must be between late July to early September due to it taking place during the school summer holidays.
